What I Loved:
1) Sean Penn besting Mickey Rourke. I truly believe Sean Penn gave the better performance, and Mickey Rourke's "I don't give a shit" attitude has begun to get on my nerves.
2) Past Oscar winners introducing the nominees. I wish they had varied the lists a little bit (People did win Oscars before 1990, you know) but unlike E! Online, it was great hearing past winners salute new talent. My favorite--Shirley Maclaine introducing Anne Hathaway. I agree with her completely; it's nice to see a young star not be a total screw-up.
3) Slumdog beating The Reader, because, well...Harvey Weinstein spreading rumors about the film was utterly disgusting.
4) Kate Winslet winning--FINALLY.
5) Dustin Lance Black, but that goes without saying. How OLD is he? Twelve? And he already has an Oscar. I need to get moving.
What I Didn't Love:
1) Hugh Jackman. He tromped around that stage like a lounge singer. I thought the scaled down awards was a one-note joke that didn't even make it past the first note. He didn't need to sing every five seconds. The production number celebrating musicals was embarrassing. And none of the jokes were funny. Sorry, Hugh. Stick with the Tonys.
2) Beyonce. Does she need to be at every award show? Does anybody want to see her that much? Did she need to sing "At Last" after Etta James already ripped her apart? Neccessary? Anyone?
3) Having Best Director be announced before Best Actor and Actress. It was an insulting ploy to keep people watching longer.
4) The overall lack of people recognizing that this is THE OSCARS! Not the MTV Movie Awards. If you want to have fun, go to the Golden Globes. Oscars mean business, as Warren Beatty once said.
5) The tribute to action films. If you wanted to honor The Dark Knight, you should have nominated it.
That's all.
