Before I begin, let me say this.
This is not an article about the immorality of extramarital affairs.
I'm not interested in writing about that, plus I don't believe anybody's in any sort of place to judge when it comes to who's sleeping with who.
This is an article about business.
The Other Woman Business.
This week, Rielle Hunter made a big splash all over the news simply because she's the "other woman" in the John Edwards scandal.
I say "simply" because I can't understand why in the world that would warrant a page in GQ. Yes, I know--sex sells, but this isn't just sex. This is a woman capitalizing on her bad behavior.
Aha! You think you caught me moralizing, but I'm really not.
I don't call people out on their bad behavior, but when they call themselves out on it, and then proceed to spin it into a book deal, I get a little irritated--if only because then they clog up my television.
When the Tiger Woods scandal broke, there was a mistress on every channel. Now, one of them has even managed to spin it into a job on Access Hollywood.
I can't help but wonder--
Don't these women have mothers? Don't they have families? Don't they have people who are going to be awfully embarrassed to see them on the news as Other Woman #12?
I'm not excusing the men for their bad behavior, but at least they suffer the consequences of a tarnished reputation.
These women are basically selling their reputations for a quick spot on 20/20.
Maybe I'm biased because I don't see the fascination in any of their stories. Is anyone actually curious as to what John Edwards or Tiger Woods or some random Congressman is like in bed? I know I'm not.
Are you?
