Fans of 24 are sad that their show is about to go off the air, but they're not completely devastated.
Why?
Because there's a good chance 24 will be resurrected as part of a hot new trend.
Take a t.v. show and bring it straight to the cinemaplex.
For a long time, the idea of turning a television show into a movie without remaking it completely was considered a disastrous idea.
The X-Files tried it over ten years ago, and the result was a film that pleased neither fans, critics, nor newbies who thought maybe they could follow the story without ever having seen the show. It was still a modest hit at the box office, but nobody was clamoring to take NYPD Blue and throw it on the big screen.
Then came the double whammy:
The Simpsons, and more recently, Sex and the City.
All of a sudden, television shows are the new safe bets for blockbuster movies.
The newly canceled Heroes is already being discussed as a t.v. movie, and I'd be shocked if the creators of Lost didn't figure out some way to continue their megahit show into a movie franchise.
Granted, The X-Files found it a little trickier because their show was still running when they made the movie. That presented the issue of how to continue the show for those people who didn't go out to see Mulder and Scully's Big Adventure. They tried again with the second X-Files movie, complete with a stand-alone story, but by that time, X-Files mania had died down whereas Sex and the City's was still going strong.
So which tv shows would be good movie transfers?
I'd vote for that Lost movie. I'd love to see Veronica Mars put a nice period on what was a wonderful show with no closure. Maybe the 90210 kids could have a summer adventure?
There is one movie that did it perfectly about fifteen years ago. They managed to have a hit film, a running series, and no continuity problems.
You may have heard of it--
It was called Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.
Hmm, maybe it takes a certain kind of show...
