Thoughts on Summer 2012

Now that summer's drawing to a close, I thought I'd mention some of my favorite (and not so favorite) things that happened in the pop culture universe over the past three months.

~ Dark Knight Rises lived up to all my expectations--even after Gawker skewered it.  Did it make as much as Dark Knight?  No.  Should anybody really care?  Absolutely not.

~ On the flip side, I don't care how much money The Amazing Spiderman made.  It was still an unnecessary remake (and yes, I refuse to use the word "reboot.")  "Reboot" may be my least favorite word of the summer.

~ "Call Me Maybe?"  Still good.
~ "Some Nights?"  Still good.
~ "Chloe" by Grouplove?  Should be a hit.  Get on that hipsters, this is your jam.

~ Louie on FX keeps getting better, whereas True Blood and Weeds are so bad, if you still like them, I may have to question your ability to see and hear.

~ And the "TV Show I'm Sure Is Enjoyable But I Have No Intention of Ever Watching It" award goes to...Bunheads.  For some reason, I'm all set.

~ Newest cashcow?  SongPop rehab.  I'm opening the first one.  So much for a productive summer.

~ Joseph Gordon-Levitt made his first bad movie (Premium Rush) and I forgave him midway through the opening credits.

~ The real reason I'm angry Kristen Stewart cheated?  It means I had to see Twilight stars on every magazine and that ridiculous new movie hasn't even come out yet.  Oh, and by the way, both Snow White movies were terrible (sorry Julia).

~ A great book to go into Fall with?  NW by Zadie Smith.  It's September, people.  Time to put the beach reads away.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have a barbecue to attend to.

So today was a rough day for everybody who isn't a @#$%-ing #$%hole. Let's just start there. If that upsets you, by all means, go straight to hell. Theater and the Outbreak

After last week's interview, a representative from a theater that recently experienced the results of opening too soon reached out to speak with me. I want to thank this person for coming forward in the hopes that it'll change some minds about what's safe and what isn't when it comes to the performing arts. Here's the interview: ME:  So this wasn't a full production or-- THEM:  No. It was us trying to do a little something for friends and donors. ME:  Who is 'us?' THEM:  The board of _____. ME:  And how long have you been on the board? THEM:  Three years. ME:  What was this going to be? People You Know Are More Important Than People You Don't Know

This post is in response to arguing with people--straight and gay alike--about a certain celebrity, whether or not she's an ally, if she's pandering, if pandering matters, and whether or not I'm an asshole. The last part is probably an enthusiastic "Yes" but let's reflect on this for a bit anyway without actually giving more time to an argument about a person none of us know, which is a crucial part of what I want to talk about. People you know are more important than people you don't know. I realize it's tricky in an age where we've never been closer or more engaged to our celebrities to keep in mind that we do not know them, they are not our friends, and while we may love them and stan and feel like we're attacked when they're attacked-- That is not true.
