The 2009 Alphabet

I'm determined to prove that 2009 wasn't that bad a year by using my 2009 Alphabet.

First thing that pops into my mind and it HAS to be an optimistic thing.

Here we go--

A - Andrew Holder graduated from Rhode Island College--granted, he burned the place down on the way out, but he managed to do it without ruining his hair.

B - Book, namely 'Let the Great World Spin' by Colum McCann--one of the best I've ever read.

C - 'Coast of Utopia: Part One--Voyage.' I decided to return to directing by taking on Tom Stoppard, heavy philosophy, and Russian history. How did I pull it off? Three reasons: My cast, my cast, my cast.

D - Dexter--enough said.

E - 'Everything's Possible'--I had so much fun doing a show in Christin's bookstore. Her support and the support of the people who performed in the show and came to see it helped start my year off on exactly the right track.

F - Fallon's wedding. I've never been so happy for someone. She's like my big sister, and she deserves the world. I managed to not cry until I got home. A miracle.

G - 'The Glass Menagerie'--Finally got to do one of my favorite plays in a role I never expected to play.

H -Henderson, my character in 'You Can't Take It With You' at 2nd Story where I got to do a scene with the amazing Bob Colonna, and work at a great theater with a great group of people.

I - 'I Am My Own Wife'--best local theater I saw all year--twice.

J - 'Julie and Julia'--it was great to see the book that changed my life become such a delightful movie.

K - Kris Allen Beats Adam Lambert on Idol. Now if only a Greek warrior would banish him back to--Oops, almost got negative there.

L - 'The Last Days of Judas Iscariot' AND 'Leann'--I'll make that one a tie. One was one of the most satisfying artistic experiences of my live, and the other is the person who made it possible. Let's throw in a third 'L'--Lucky (Me).

M - Moises Kaufman, Matt Galloway, and the other characters I played in "The Laramie Project." Another dream show checked off the list, and checked off with a really great group of people.

N - 'Next to Normal'--Totally destroyed me.

0 - Open Salon.com--my new favorite posting site for writing.

P - 'Paparazzi'--best song of the year

Q - Queens, the Catty Bitchy Kind. So much fun to continue writing with characters over a long period of time. Keeps me sharp.

R - Reunions--Got to see both my LSA friends and my RIC friends this much. It's nice to be around people who remind you of who you're supposed to be rather than who you wound up being.

S - Solo Show--after three years, I did another solo show (Burn Every Bridge), and it was great to find out I could still learn that much text and perform it without having a nervous breakdown

T - Tony Awards--Best in Recent Memory, plus Bret Michaels taking that header.

U - 'Up in the Air'--best movie of the year.

V - 'Victor, In Group'--best piece of writing written by me--ever. (Pats back and wonders where the hell it came from.)

W - Writing--so grateful.

X - I'll leave this spot open, because 25 is a better number than 26. Just a thought.

Y - 'You Might Not Be Crazy'--my writing performed by forty of the best performers I know. Incredible.

Z - 'Zeitoun' by Dave Eggers--book I'm planning to read...next year.

A List of People Who Can Go to Hell Now That I Can't Have Elizabeth Warren

So today was a rough day for everybody who isn't a @#$%-ing #$%hole. Let's just start there. If that upsets you, by all means, go straight to hell. This entire rant is going to be exactly what it sounds like. I am mad and I am going to exercise my right to BLOG ABOUT IT LIKE IT'S 1995, SO BUCKLE UP, BUTTERCUP. I really don't even know where to start, so let's just jump right in with the first person who comes to mind. Bloomberg, go to hell.  You really didn't have anything specific to do with today, but you can just go to hell for spending an ungodly amount of money on literally nothing.  I mean, you could have lit millions of dollars on fire and at least warmed the hands of the homeless, but instead, you made tv stations across the country that are already owned by Conservatives rich, so kudos to you and go to hell. Amy Klobuchar, I STUCK UP FOR YOU AMY.  I got into FIGHTS on SOCIAL MEDIA while DEFENDING your sorry, self-interested ass.  You know

Theater and the Outbreak

After last week's interview, a representative from a theater that recently experienced the results of opening too soon reached out to speak with me. I want to thank this person for coming forward in the hopes that it'll change some minds about what's safe and what isn't when it comes to the performing arts. Here's the interview: ME:  So this wasn't a full production or-- THEM:  No. It was us trying to do a little something for friends and donors. ME:  Who is 'us?' THEM:  The board of _____. ME:  And how long have you been on the board? THEM:  Three years. ME:  What was this going to be? THEM:  There's a, uh, beautiful park here in town, and we wanted to do an outdoor performance of a Shakespeare as a benefit, because, as you know, theaters are having a hard time right now paying the bills. We checked with the local government and the health department for the state to make sure we were doing everything the way we needed to in order to keep everyone s

People You Know Are More Important Than People You Don't Know

This post is in response to arguing with people--straight and gay alike--about a certain celebrity, whether or not she's an ally, if she's pandering, if pandering matters, and whether or not I'm an asshole. The last part is probably an enthusiastic "Yes" but let's reflect on this for a bit anyway without actually giving more time to an argument about a person none of us know, which is a crucial part of what I want to talk about. People you know are more important than people you don't know. I realize it's tricky in an age where we've never been closer or more engaged to our celebrities to keep in mind that we do not know them, they are not our friends, and while we may love them and stan and feel like we're attacked when they're attacked-- That is not true. That is not real. They are in no tangible way connected to us. Now, as someone who is obsessed with pop culture, I get that it's a little hypocritical for me to be making
